inTIL my "space saving" magnetic knife bar ruined 3 of my good chef knives
Oof. My buddy did this with a cheap magnetic strip and ruined his Shun. It was brutal.

inHad to decide between a fixer-upper in town or a move-in-ready 30 minutes out
Yeah but the thing with fixer-uppers nobody talks about is the hidden stuff that can wreck you. My buddy thought he was getting a steal on an old house and ended up finding termite damage in the walls that cost him like 15 grand. @amy975 at least you know your place is solid, even if the commute sucks. Sometimes the pain you can see is better than the surprise pain.

inPro tip: stop using fantasy tropes as a crutch
Man, I had a buddy who tried this once and it backfired hard. He wrote a whole story where the "magical" forest was actually dying because some ancient curse was leaching the life out of it. But he made the curse the main character's best friend, like a literal shadow that just wanted to help but was poisoning everything around it. Ended up with a pretty deep take on how even good intentions can wreck a place. He never used the word "chosen one" once, and it actually got picked up by a small press. Kinda proved the point that taking the mystical stuff and turning it into a real problem gives you way more to work with than just slapping pointy ears on a royal child.

inJust realized that green-taped corners aren't actually worth the extra time
Green tape's just hype, bet half the guys using it still get cracks anyway.

inTIL a quick chat with a retired welder at a coffee shop in Tacoma changed how I think about apprenticeships
Yeah my uncle was a machinist and he always said the same thing, you learn way more on the floor than in a classroom. He took me under his wing for a summer and I picked up stuff in three months that would've taken years in a school setting.
