Tried hand digging vs renting a machine for 8 posts on a big job. Night and day.
Last week I had to set 8 corner posts on a 2 acre lot outside of Austin. Started with a clam digger and after 2 hours I was barely 3 feet deep in rocky clay. Switched to a one man auger rental for $85 and finished all 8 holes in under 90 minutes. Has anyone else hit that kind of soil that makes you question your whole career choice?
Oh man, that rocky clay is the absolute worst! I spent a whole Saturday once trying to dig four holes with a shovel and ended up just sitting in the dirt staring at the sky wondering what I did wrong in life. That $85 rental sounds like a steal compared to the therapy bills I almost needed.
That's the whole trick with tough jobs in general. You gotta know when to stop banging your head against the wall and just pay the small fee to make it disappear.
