Wasted $45 on a fancy fermentation crock that cracked on first use

I bought a glazed stoneware crock from a local homebrew shop in Portland thinking it would be perfect for my sauerkraut. After just one batch I noticed a hairline crack inside the glaze. I tried to patch it with food-grade epoxy but the second batch got moldy anyway. Now I just use plain glass mason jars with airlocks and they work way better. Has anyone else had bad luck with stoneware crocks or is it just me?

Did you season the crock first? I just use pickle pipes on wide mouth jars.

Wait, you're supposed to season ceramic crocks before using them? I always thought that was just for cast iron... @uma_nguyen24 just made me realize I've been doing it wrong this whole time, that explains a lot.

My buddy bought the same kind of crock and it cracked on him too.
