I finally saw the value in small talk after a flea market faux pas
I was at a local thrift store and found a set of mid-century chairs that caught my eye. I started chatting with the seller about them, but I accidentally mentioned seeing similar ones for less at another spot, which made things awkward. He kindly explained how things like original finish and wear can change the price a lot. That whole mess made me realize that being friendly and asking questions can actually help you learn what makes items special and score better deals.

Maybe, but in my experience that surface-level small talk is what opens the door to the real chat where you learn stuff. It all kinda starts with just being friendly.

Calling that "small talk" is a bit off. You were having a real chat about the chairs, not just passing time. Small talk is surface level, but you got into specifics like original finish, which is how you actually learn. That deeper conversation is what helps you understand value and not step in it again.
