Found a cheap trick for keeping hydrangeas from wilting in the shop
I was losing so many hydrangeas within a day of getting them in, especially during July here in Austin. Last week I finally tried dipping the stems in alum powder right after cutting them, and they stayed firm for almost 5 days. Did any of you know about this trick or have something else that works better?

Honestly I tried the old boiling water trick for a while and it worked okay but not great. Then I started putting a tiny bit of bleach in the water and that helped a little more. But alum powder though? That sounds wild and I wanna try it now because hydrangeas are the worst about wilting. I got so fed up with mine at home I literally just gave up on buying them for a while. But yeah I think the trick is really about sealing the stem fast before air gets in. Alum probably does that better than anything else I've heard of.

yo no way, i just started doing this too! i work with flowers on the side and alum is a total game changer for hydrangeas, keeps them from drooping like crazy. definitely the best trick i've found so far.

Dude yes, alum is seriously underrated. I was skeptical at first cause it sounded like some old wives tale but it really does seal the stems up fast. I do a quick dip in boiling water first, then straight into alum powder, and they last like a week longer than anything else I tried.
