I finally watched that weird 90s show my friend kept pushing
Was totally skeptical about 'Space Cases' on Nickelodeon, thought it was just a cheap kids' sci-fi knockoff. The episode where the crew gets trapped in a sentient nebula that feeds on their memories actually had some solid writing. Anyone else remember this one or have another forgotten 90s gem?

The Odyssey is exactly the kind of show that would've been my whole personality if I'd found it at 12 instead of wasting time on Goosebumps reruns. I remember renting a VHS from the library thinking it was a space movie and instead got that whole coma world thing - man, my kid brain was not ready for that kind of existential dread. The episode where the kid's mom in the coma world starts fading because his real mom is moving on still messes me up. I'm 34 now and I'll probably have some weird dream about that nebula eating my memories of where I left my car keys. At least I'm consistent in my taste for cheap sets and heavy topics.

That sentient nebula episode really stuck with me too. It makes you wonder how many other shows from that era had surprisingly deep ideas hidden under the cheap sets. I spent a whole summer trying to find something as weirdly good, and it led me to "The Odyssey," that Canadian show about the boy in a coma world.

The Odyssey actually started in 1992, which puts it a bit later than most of those classic cheap-set shows. You're right though, nancy351, it had that same weird depth with its coma world idea. It's a shame more people don't remember it.
