I could only stare as a core shift turned our good cast into scrap

Now we have to redo the entire pour from scratch.

Check the gates like dakotad97 said before you scrap the whole thing.

But how do you know if the gating system is still usable?

That's rough, but calling it all scrap might be jumping the gun. A core shift can wreck the main cavity but sometimes the gating system or other bits are still good. Salvaging those can at least save some time and material on the next pour. Seen it happen a few times where the panic makes people bin stuff that could've been used. Still a total reset though, which absolutely sucks.
