Stopped using the big ladle for the last pour on a 300 pound casting.

The boss at the Toledo plant always said to use the big one for the final fill, but it kept leaving a cold shut line. I switched to two smaller ladles for the last bit and the surface came out smooth. Anyone else find the standard way of doing something here is just wrong?

Heard a similar thing from a guy who used to pour at the old Lima foundry. They had a rule about pre-heating a certain mold type that everyone followed, but it made the metal cool too fast. He just stopped doing it one day and the quality got way better.

That rule exists for a reason, man.

Exactly, sometimes the rule is just there because nobody ever questioned it before!
