My grocery store had a 'manager's special' on chicken that was a total game changer this week.

I got 8 pounds of perfectly good chicken thighs for just $4 total because the sell-by date was the next day. Has anyone else found a crazy good deal like that recently?

That "sell-by date" thing is how I shop now. Last month I got a huge pack of ground beef for almost nothing, froze it in smaller bags, and we're still eating from it. You just have to be ready to cook or freeze it right away.

Actually, those manager specials can help cut down on food waste, which is a bigger deal than most people think. @the_emery has a point about not buying stuff you won't use, but planning a meal around a cheap protein feels pretty smart. It's a small win that also keeps good food from getting tossed.

Gotta disagree hard on chasing those manager specials. It's a false economy that makes you buy stuff you didn't plan for just because it's cheap. That chicken forces you to rearrange your whole fridge and meal plan on the store's schedule. You're also taking a real gamble on food quality and safety for a couple bucks saved. It trains stores to push products right to the edge, which feels kinda gross. I'd rather pay full price for fresh food I actually want to eat.
