My smartwatch battery died right before a 5K race

I was getting ready for a local 5K last Saturday and my usual smartwatch, a two-year-old model, wouldn't turn on. I had to choose between running without any tracking or quickly buying a new one at the store. I grabbed a basic fitness tracker for $60 instead of a full smartwatch. It tracked my run time and heart rate just fine, which was all I really needed. Honestly, I didn't miss the extra apps or notifications during the race. Has anyone else had a gadget fail right when you needed it most? What's your backup plan?

My buddy had his phone completely die right before a big job interview downtown. He needed it for the map to find the building. Ended up running into a coffee shop to ask for directions like it was 1995. Makes you wonder why we put all our trust in these little gadgets, right? He keeps paper directions in his glove box now, just in case.

Maybe gadgets fail, but so do paper maps, right @shanejackson?

But do you think you'll keep using the basic tracker now, or go back to the smartwatch?
