I used to think Komodo dragons were slow until I saw one chase a deer

I always thought they just ambushed stuff from hiding, then I watched a documentary where one ran about 12 mph for 30 seconds straight on Rinca Island. That changed my whole view because they actually have stamina and can accelerate quick. Has anyone else been surprised by how fast a big lizard can move in person or on video?

Yeah, that specific line about "ran about 12 mph for 30 seconds" got me too. A buddy of mine was on a guided tour in Indonesia and said their guide told them to stay at least 15 feet back from any dragon, and of course one guy thought he knew better and crept closer for a photo. The dragon didn't chase him but it turned and took like three fast steps in his direction, and my buddy said it moved way quicker than he expected from such a big animal, like a burst of speed that made everyone jump back. Really drove home that they're not just slow ambushers, they can actually cover ground fast if they want to.
