Bought my sister a $40 candle set and she hated the smell

Last month I got her this three-pack from a shop in Denver that said 'earthy vanilla and pine.' She texted me a photo of them sitting in her bathroom closet, said they smell like burnt plastic. Has anyone else had luck with subscription boxes for fussy family members?

Bought my sister a $40 candle set and she hated the smell" - I mean, honestly, is that really the end of the world? She didn't like some scented wax, not like you bought her a timeshare. I've gotten my mom so many subscription boxes over the years and she just stacks them in her basement unopened. Maybe just get her a gift card next time and let her be the one to return it.

Isn't it a bit harsh to say she should just get a gift card? A $40 candle set shows you put thought into it, tried to pick something nice based on what you know about her. Getting a gift card feels like giving up, like you don't care enough to try.

But honestly the candle was $40 and she couldn't even pretend to like it for a week? That's on her, not the gift. Subscription boxes are even worse because then you're stuck paying month after month for stuff someone might not want. Gift cards are the only safe bet with picky people, saves everyone the awkward "oh thanks, I love burnt plastic" conversation.
