I thought a custom printed mug was a safe gift until my aunt's reaction

For her birthday, I got a mug printed with a photo of her old dog from a local shop in Austin. It cost about $35 and took a week. When she opened it, she got really quiet and later told me the dog had just passed away a month before, something I didn't know. I learned that even a thoughtful, custom gift can miss the mark if you're not totally up to date on someone's life. What's a good way to check in on someone's current situation without spoiling a surprise gift?

Maybe ask a mutual friend for a quick life update before you buy anything, that's what I'd do lol.

But what if the mutual friend is ALSO out of the loop? Happened to me last year, bought a fancy baby gift and it turned out the couple had split up months before. Awkward city. How do you even ask that without sounding like you're digging for gossip?
