Yeah, saw an article about how the mix tape was a whole project. You had to plan the order, write out the tracklist by hand, time the pauses just right. It was a physical thing you made, not just a playlist link. That effort WAS the gift.

Actually it was called a mixtape because you recorded songs off the radio. The real work was hitting record at the exact right moment to avoid the DJ talking. Making one from your own CDs was easier, but still way more hands-on than clicking a link.

Made a mixtape for my ex back in high school, spent three hours getting the song transitions perfect. He still has it in his glove box, says it's better than any Spotify playlist.
