The birthday gift that almost started a fire

I got my brother a fancy indoor pizza oven for his birthday last month, thinking it was a cool idea. I set it up on his kitchen counter in Portland to show him how it worked, and it got way hotter than I expected. The heat actually melted the plastic backsplash behind his stove in about 10 minutes. We had to unplug it fast and open all the windows because of the smell. Now I'm stuck trying to find a less dangerous gift before his party next week. Anyone have good gift ideas for someone who already has a normal kitchen but likes to cook?

What about a really nice knife sharpener? A good one makes a huge difference and it's way less likely to melt your house. My brother got a simple pull-through kind and his old knives feel brand new now.

My cousin bought a pull-through sharpener last year and somehow managed to chip his favorite chef's knife on the first use.

Did your brother's pull-through sharpener actually sharpen the knives or just grind them down?
