Vent: Finding a gift for my brother's new apartment took me three weeks
I wanted to get him something useful, not just a candle. He's super practical, so I figured a good tool set. I spent hours online reading reviews, got confused by all the options, and went to three different stores. I finally settled on a basic 65-piece set from a brand my coworker mentioned. The whole process, from first idea to buying it, was almost a full month. Anyone have a better system for picking gifts for practical people?

Oh man, I feel this. I went through the same thing with my sister last year. What finally worked for me was just straight up asking her for a list of specific things she actually needed, like a new can opener or a certain type of kitchen knife. It felt less personal at first, but she was so happy to get something she really wanted. I mean, it saves you the guessing game and they get something useful. Maybe try that next time.

Honestly, my gift-giving process is just me wandering the store aisles in a panic. Last time I tried to be practical, I bought my cousin a fire extinguisher. I mean, it's useful, but it definitely set a weird tone for his housewarming party.

That fire extinguisher sounds like a great gift to me. It shows you care about their safety more than just getting another decorative candle. What's more personal than wanting someone to be safe in their new home?
