I finally switched from using stock photo sites for my mood boards to just taking my own photos around town.

For a branding project last month, I spent $50 on a bunch of generic cityscape shots from a big site. The client said it felt 'corporate and cold.' So I grabbed my phone, walked around my neighborhood for an hour, and took pictures of peeling paint, old signs, and weird textures. Using those raw, real photos as the base for my color and texture palette made the whole design feel authentic and unique. Has anyone else made a switch like that and found it changed the vibe of your work completely?

My local laundromat signs became my best texture library.

That bit about the client saying it felt 'corporate and cold' is so true. My friend who does album art did the same thing, started taking photos of rust and concrete in parking garages. Said it made the work feel like it had a real place.
