Finally figured out why that balayage kept pulling warm
Spent 3 hours on a client yesterday trying to cool down her ends, only to realize the toner I grabbed was demi-permanent, not the usual permanent formula. Has anyone else had a toner just not take because of the developer type?

Actually, it's the other way around. Demi-permanent toner with a low volume developer, like 10 volume, deposits color but doesn't lift. Permanent toner with a higher volume developer can lift a tiny bit, which might be why it wasn't cooling the ends enough. You might have needed a stronger toner or a different formula to counteract that warmth.

Is hair toner really that big of a deal?

Used to think toner was just a fancy word for purple shampoo. Tried to fix my own brassy blonde with a box dye once and it turned my hair gray in some spots, orange in others. Had to pay a pro to fix it, which convinced me the chemistry actually matters.
