My crew's coffee break habit actually saves us time on the dig

We started taking five minutes to plan the next move over coffee. I realized that this quick chat prevents us from digging in the wrong spot (you know, like that mess last month). Do any of you use small breaks to double-check the work ahead?

That's smart turning a break into a quick reset. It builds a habit of actually stopping to think instead of just charging ahead. We do something similar with a two minute "tool check" that's really a mental check on what step comes next. Those tiny pauses let someone speak up if a detail feels off. Makes the whole crew feel responsible for catching problems, not just the foreman. It turns what looks like lost time into the cheapest insurance you can get.

Two minutes for a tool check sounds about right. Management probably sees it as lost time until a mistake costs them real money. Like @holly470 said, it turns the whole crew into problem catchers, which is better than just the foreman doing all the worrying. I've watched teams skip these pauses and then waste half a day fixing a simple error. But sure, let's all just keep moving fast. Nothing bad ever happens that way.
