Just realized I've changed my furnace filter 14 times in 3 years and that's $84 I could have spent on literally anything else

It adds up quick especially when the generic ones from Home Depot are like $6 each but at least my AC still works in this Edmonton heat, anyone else track how much they actually spend on basic maintenance stuff?

Wait, aren't those $6 filters saving you from a way more expensive AC repair bill down the road though? I figure spending a little on filters beats dropping hundreds on a service call when my unit freezes over.

Exactly right @amy975. I learned this the HARD way after a $400 service call because my evaporator coil froze solid from a cheap $3 filter I left in for two months. The tech showed me the ice and said something like "you saved six bucks, now you're paying six hundred." Now I buy the basic MERV 8 filters in a 6-pack at the hardware store and swap them every 30 days in summer. That little bit of airflow makes a HUGE difference and keeps the compressor from working overtime to pull air through a dirty filter.
