My coworker Dave said I should just ignore the weird noise in my car's engine for another month and now I'm stuck on the shoulder of I-90 waiting for a tow truck

He swore it was just loose heat shield rattle and that exact advice cost me $1,400 in repairs this morning, has anyone else had a so-called car expert friend steer them totally wrong?

Tell Dave he owes you a ride to work for the next month since his expert advice just cost you a small fortune. Sounds like his "loose heat shield" was actually the engine eating itself alive while you kept driving. Hope that tow truck driver doesn't charge by the laugh.

Hold up a second - Dave might be getting too much heat here. You took his advice and ran with it for a whole month without getting a second opinion from a mechanic. Friends can be wrong, but we all have a responsibility to double check car stuff before it gets this bad.
