Why does nobody talk about the mud on the Lincoln Woods Trail after a rain?

I did 5 miles on the Lincoln Woods Trail last Saturday after a solid day of rain and the mud was unreal. Like ankle-deep in spots and my boots are still caked with it. I thought trails would drain better in the trees but nope. Next time I'm checking the weather first and bringing gaiters for sure. Anyone have a trick for cleaning mud out of treads without wrecking them?

Man, I feel your pain... I read somewhere that the Lincoln Woods trail sits on old glacial till, so the soil is basically clay mixed with rocks. That stuff turns into a slick paste after rain, doesn't drain at all. I did a hike there back in April after a wet week and my boots were like two pounds heavier by the end. For cleaning, I heard you can use a stiff plastic brush and a hose but let the mud dry first, scraping off the big chunks. Scrubbing wet mud just pushes it deeper into the treads.

Right after a wet snowmelt last March I did Lincoln Woods and my boots were caked with that reddish clay so bad I couldn't even lace them up tight anymore. I tried scraping it off with a stick on the trail but it was useless, just smeared around. Ended up leaving them on my back porch for two days until it cracked off in big chunks, then hit them with a plastic brush. That clay basically turns into cement once it dries, easy to knock off.
