I was totally wrong about vertical gardens

Thought they were just a gimmick for Instagram but my neighbor convinced me to try one on my balcony. Now I'm getting cherry tomatoes and basil from a 2x4 foot space that used to just hold a broom. Has anyone else had good luck with a specific wall planter setup?

A buddy of mine from work tried vertical planters last year and he swore they kept his strawberries clean from slugs, just like @tarajenkins said about the climbing bugs. He had a mess of earwigs too though, so he ended up putting a sticky barrier strip along the top edge of his wall planters. That did the trick for him, but I guess no setup is perfect for every pest.

Has anyone else dealt with earwigs though? I tried a vertical herb garden last summer and those little guys climbed right up the wall and hid in the planters at night. Maybe it depends on what you're growing, but I found ground level plants actually got less bug traffic overall for me. Slugs were never my problem, it was the critters that could climb that drove me crazy.

The real game changer for me was the pest control angle nobody talks about. Having the plants up off the ground keeps slugs and snails away completely. My neighbors with ground level gardens are always fighting those things but I've never seen a single one on my wall. Has that been your experience too with the vertical setup?
