TIL my "space saving" magnetic knife bar ruined 3 of my good chef knives

Picked up a cheap magnetic strip from Amazon for $15, thought it was a genius way to free up drawer space in my tiny kitchen. After about 6 months, I pulled out my Wusthof to slice a tomato and noticed it had a dull spot and a tiny chip near the tip. Turns out the magnets were too strong and pulling the blades sideways when I yanked them off. Lost about $120 worth of knives before I figured it out. Anyone else had cutting tools get wrecked by storage hacks like this?

Oof. My buddy did this with a cheap magnetic strip and ruined his Shun. It was brutal.

Oh come on, is it really that bad? I've tossed cheap knives on magnetic strips for years and they're still cutting just fine.
