Three years back, I let my brother borrow my Watchmen book. He put his coffee cup on it and left a ring right on the cover. I should have known better, since he still asks if I'm done with my coloring books. In my experience, explaining comics to family is like trying to describe a color to someone who's never seen it. Your mileage may vary, but I've found it's safer to just nod and enjoy the stories on my own.
