Steel Suppliers Changing Grades Mid-Order

Been buying from the same steel supplier for years, but lately I keep running into a real headache. They'll list a specific alloy, say 5160, and that's what I order for my spring work. But the last three batches have had slightly different stuff mixed in, nothing major on the sheet but it acts totally different in the quench. My normal tempering routine leaves it either too soft or way too brittle. Now I have to test every single bar before I even start a project, which adds hours I didn't plan for. It feels like they're just slapping whatever's close enough into the same bin to clear stock. Really throws off the consistency of my work, you know? Makes me not want to trust the label anymore, which is a huge problem when you're trying to run a shop.

I finally appreciated slow-moving elevators after visiting a mountain resort.

The gentle ascent kept our ears from popping and made me think more about passenger comfort in my work.

Pro tip: My son asking about a ticking noise saved a diesel job

I let my boy watch me look over a big rig engine. He kept pointing to a soft tick when it ran. I had gotten used to the sound and did not think it was bad. We checked and found a fuel injector going out. Now I listen for that tick on every engine check.
