That 3am dub vs sub debate thread gave me a headache and a new way to rewatch

Someone in the episode discussion said the dub changed a whole subplot with a mistranslation, so I checked both versions side by side last night. The sub had a character confessing something that the dub completely skipped, and now I'm honestly doubting which one is the "real" story. Has anyone else found a translation difference that flipped their view of a show?

I’ve got a buddy who speaks Spanish and he caught a similar thing watching some telenovela with his girlfriend, where the English subtitles kept referring to a character as “cousin” but the actual word was closer to “childhood friend,” and it changed the whole vibe of the scene for them. The funny part is, this happens everywhere, not just anime, like when I read a translated menu at a local spot and it said “mystery meat” but the original was just “pork,” and suddenly I didn’t trust the place anymore. It makes you wonder if we’re all just living in a world where every conversation has a dub and a sub version, and we only ever hear one side of it. Once you notice that, you start second-guessing every “official” translation, even the stuff in English that gets edited for time or tone. That’s the real plot twist, I guess, the story you think you’re watching is just someone else’s translation of the actual one.
