The thing that finally clicked about filler episodes after talking to my neighbor

My neighbor Mike, who's been watching anime since the 90s, said something that stuck with me last week. He told me filler episodes aren't just wasted time, they're the only reason some side characters get any development at all. I used to skip every filler arc in One Piece but now I'm going back to watch a few because he had a point about how they build the world. Has anyone else changed their mind on filler after hearing someone else's take?

Filler episodes are just padding to keep the anime from catching up to the manga. I get what your neighbor is saying about side character development, but most of that stuff is non-canon anyway so why get invested? Look at Naruto, remember that whole arc with the three-tailed beast? Completely forgettable, no impact on anything later. I'd rather read the manga and get the real story instead of sitting through episodes that don't matter.

Gotta disagree a bit, I mean those "non-canon" side character moments are still fun to watch even if they don't affect the main story later. It's just a different kind of payoff, like getting extra time with characters you already like.
