Update: My local anime club in Denver completely missed the point of a classic scene

Last week at our club meet, everyone was gushing about the final fight in 'Akira' being pure action, but I argued it's actually about Tetsuo's fear of being left behind. I brought up the specific hospital scene at the 1 hour 12 minute mark where his childhood memory flashes, which everyone brushed off as filler. It changed the whole vibe for a bit, but I stood my ground. Anyone else have a scene their group totally misread?

Sounds like your club watches anime with the sound off. They probably think the opening of Evangelion is just about a cool robot fight, not a kid having a full mental breakdown. Classic move, missing the point for some flashy lights.

Exactly, like what @miab87 said, it's a whole vibe of just seeing the surface. People get so caught up in the cool animation they miss the actual story being told. It's why so many big scenes get totally misunderstood.

What other classic scenes do you think get that same shallow treatment?
