3 years of worm bin trials finally paid off last week

I started a worm bin in my Brooklyn apartment back in 2021 and it was a stinky mess for so long. Last week I opened it up and there was ZERO smell just nice earthy dirt. I switched to adding more shredded paper and less citrus peels about 6 months ago and that did the trick. Has anyone else had luck balancing their worm bin with a specific ratio?

Oh man, that first year of worm bin stink is brutal. I remember when I started mine I was convinced I was slowly poisoning myself with whatever was rotting in there. The citrus thing makes sense though I've heard worms hate it. I'm glad the paper trick worked for you because that earthy smell is like a little victory after all that trial and error. Maybe I'll try cutting back on my banana peels too since those seem to attract fruit flies no matter what.

I read somewhere that worms actually have a weird reaction to salt, so maybe that's why the citrus thing works since citrus has some natural salts in the peel. Your mileage may vary but cutting back on the bananas helped my bin a lot.
