A customer in Denver told me my diagnostic fee was too high
I used to charge a flat $75 just to show up and look at a fridge. This guy said he called three other places and they all charged $50 or less for the first visit. I checked around and he was right, so I dropped my fee to $55 last month. Now I get more calls and still make good money on the actual repair. What do you all charge for a basic house call these days?

Actually that higher fee probably filtered out the tire-kickers and time-wasters. Charging more upfront means you only get serious calls from people who value your time. Dropping your price might bring in more volume, but you could end up running around for small jobs that never turn into real work. Sometimes a premium price sets the right expectation for quality service from the start.

Is that fee just to show up?

Basically pays for them to put on pants. At this rate they'll charge a breathing fee next.

My cousin paid a $200 "convenience fee" just to book a dentist appointment online last month. It wasn't for the cleaning, just to secure the time slot. These extra charges are everywhere now, like a tax for existing as a customer. It feels like companies are finding new ways to charge for things that used to be free. What was the last bogus fee you got stuck paying?
