Am I the only one who thinks a rice cooker is a waste of counter space
Everyone keeps telling me to buy a rice cooker but I have made rice in a plain pot on the stove for 15 years and it comes out fine every time. Two weeks ago I timed it, 18 minutes from cold water to fluffy rice, and that includes the 5 minutes it sits covered off the heat. My friend let me borrow hers for a weekend and it took 40 minutes and left a crusty ring at the bottom I had to scrub. I get that it clicks off by itself but so does a $3 kitchen timer. If you already own a pot with a lid, what is the rice cooker actually doing for you? I want to hear from people who switched and never looked back, because I do not get it.
Yes, thank you, this is exactly how I feel and I have been saying it for years. My mom gave me her old rice cooker when I moved into my first apartment and I used it maybe four times before it went to the thrift store. Mine also left that nasty crusty ring, and the whole thing was just one more bulky thing taking up space in a kitchen where counter space is already tight. The pot method works every single time for me too, and honestly I never even set a timer anymore, I just know when it is done by the sound and the smell. It takes way less time than a rice cooker and I only have one pot to wash instead of a pot plus that removable inner bowl thing. I get that some people swear by them for big batches or for keeping rice warm at a party, and hey, more power to them. But for plain old rice for dinner, a pot with a lid does the job just fine and costs you nothing extra.
