My cast iron skillet cracked on a Tuesday, tried a cheap fix
Last month I pulled my old cast iron skillet out of the oven at 450 degrees, set it on the counter, and heard this loud pop. A hairline crack ran right down the middle, guessing it was from a cold draft or thermal shock, which I never even thought about. I tried the old trick of seasoning over it with oil to sort of seal it, but it just leaked grease everywhere and smoked up the kitchen. Ended up getting a $25 lodge pan and now I warm it slow on the stove before any hot baking, but has anyone else had a skillet crack like that, or am I just unlucky?

Happened to me with a brand new Dutch oven, same exact deal. Pulled it out of the oven, set it on a cold granite counter, and it split down the side like a cheap dinner plate. I tried melting butter into the crack, thinking that would do something, but it just made a mess and my whole kitchen smelled like burnt popcorn for a week. Now I always set hot cast iron on a folded kitchen towel or a wooden board, never bare countertop. Also learned the hard way that putting a cold lid on a hot pot is asking for trouble, that's how I lost a perfectly good skillet lid. Sounds like you got off easy with just a crack, mine pretty much exploded into two pieces.
