TIL a shop in Denver taught me that waterborne paint isn't always better
I was working at a shop in Denver last fall and we got into a huge debate about waterborne vs. solvent-based paint. One old-timer swore solvent was faster and more forgiving, but the younger guys said waterborne was cleaner and matched better on modern cars. After watching a $400 Mercedes bumper get a fish-eye nightmare with waterborne, I'm not so sure. What do you all use for tricky metallic flake jobs?

That Mercedes bumper with the fisheye, were you guys prepping with a wax and grease remover or just doing a quick wipe down? I've seen waterborne freak out way more from leftover silicone than solvent ever did.

Ask @evan295 if they were using a silicone-based wax or grease remover on that Mercedes job. I swear some of those "prep" sprays actually leave a film that waterborne hates even more than old solvent would. The old-timers at my shop always said to use a fresh microfiber and plain mineral spirits for waterborne clears or else you're asking for fisheye city.
