Shoutout to the old timer who showed me a trick with a zip tie and a vacuum line
Honestly, I was chasing a rough idle on a 2012 Civic for like two hours yesterday, checking all the usual stuff. Ngl, this retired mechanic at the parts counter said to use a zip tie to pinch the PCV hose shut for a second while it was running, and the idle smoothed right out, pointing straight to a bad valve. Has anyone else used that trick to find a vacuum leak fast?

That's a solid trick. Did he say to replace the whole PCV valve or just the hose? Sometimes the hose gets brittle and cracks.

My old Civic taught me to check the grommet where the PCV valve sits into the valve cover. Honestly, betty_white39, that little rubber piece gets rock hard and leaks vacuum even if the hose and valve are new. Tbh I spent weeks chasing a rough idle before a mechanic showed me that. It's a five dollar part but nobody talks about it. You have to pull the valve out to even feel if the seal is any good.
