That time I tried a vintage torque wrench on a head gasket job

Picked up an old Snap-on clicker at a garage sale for $10, figured I'd give it a shot on my buddy's 350 Chevy. Thing was way off, ended up overtorquing three bolts before I caught it. Lesson learned, has anyone else had a classic tool let them down like that?

Can we talk about the torque spec on those new CFM56 fan blades?

Honestly, I was reading through some updated maintenance manuals last night from our shop library. Found out the torque spec for the CFM56-5B fan blade retention bolts is actually 130 foot-pounds, not the 120 I thought it was. I've been under-torquing them for months at the regional line here in Des Moines. It surprised me how much of a difference that little detail makes. Has anyone else caught a spec error like that in their own manuals?

Just realized how much I miss in-person bank deposits

I used to drive to my local branch every Friday to deposit checks from my small baking business, which took about 20 minutes total. A few months ago I switched to mobile deposit through my phone app, but now I have to wait 3 business days for funds to clear instead of getting them instantly. Has anyone else had trouble with the hold times on mobile deposits, or is it just my credit union?

Hot take: I used to think hydraulic elevator oil was all the same stuff

For the first 5 years in the trade I just grabbed whatever 32 weight was cheapest and called it a day. Then last March I had a 6 month old Smartrise controller throwing random leveling faults on a Schindler 330A. Switched from generic to a name brand ISO VG 32 with anti-foam additives and the faults stopped completely. Oil temp was running 15 degrees cooler too. Guess I was wrong thinking the spec was all that mattered. Any of you guys seen weird issues clear up just from changing oil brands?

Remember when we used to sharpen chisels on a hand crank grindstone?

I was cleaning out my grandpa's old shed last week and found his ancient hand crank wheel. Man, that thing took forever but the edge it put on a chisel was something else. I compared it to my electric bench grinder I got at a swap meet for 20 bucks and the difference was night and day. The electric one is faster sure but it heats up the steel way too quick and I ruined a good chisel edge that way. Has anyone else gone back to a slower method after getting used to power tools?

Customer brought in a 1999 Civic with a 'mystery smell' - found a half-eaten burrito under the back seat from 2018

Dude brought his Civic in last Tuesday complaining about a weird sour smell that got worse in summer. I popped the rear seat cushion and there it was, a dried out bean and cheese burrito wedged under the seat frame. Took me 45 minutes to scrape out the mess and the whole car smelled like a taco gone wrong. My coworker dared me to touch it and I almost gagged. Has anyone else found something that old or nastier in a customer's car?

My 3rd try at a leather hinge joint actually worked

Been working on a small journal cover with a leather hinge for the spine. First two tries the leather was too thick and the joint wouldn't fold right. Third time I used 2 ounce veg tan instead of 4 ounce and trimmed the hinge down to 1/4 inch wide. The fold is clean and the cover closes flat now. I guess thinner leather really does matter for small books. Anyone else struggle with getting the leather weight right for hinges?

My old boss told me to stop saying 'I think' in emails and it actually got me promoted after 8 months

He said it makes you sound unsure even when you know the answer, so I dropped it and started getting replies within an hour instead of three days, has anyone else had a small word change make that big a difference in how coworkers treat you?

That cheap charcoal i tried almost ruined my whole cook

I grabbed a bag of Royal Oak lump from the hardware store in Columbus last weekend - it was like $8. Man, that stuff threw sparks everywhere and gave my brisket a weird chemical taste. I learned you really can't skimp on fuel if you want good results. Has anyone else had a bad experience with bargain charcoal?
