I went 3 winters without an extended warranty and ate a $2,400 transmission bill in Boise
For 3 winters I skipped the extended warranty on my Outback because I figured the factory coverage would have me covered if anything big popped. Then last January the CVT let go at 61,000 miles in Boise, just past the 60k powertrain cap, and the shop quoted me $2,400 out of pocket. What tipped me off was the service writer pulling up my file and saying I missed the window by a thousand miles. Do you all buy the extended warranty through the dealer or somewhere else, and did anyone actually get their money back on a claim?
Funny how life works that way, warranties are basically insurance where you're betting against yourself, and the house usually wins until the one time it doesn't. I see the same thing with phones, appliances, even roofs, people skip the coverage to save a few bucks a month and then get hit with the whole bill at the worst time. That thousand mile thing stings though, seems like they could've given you a break since you were barely over. Buy it through the dealer only if you plan to keep the car past the factory cap, otherwise you're just paying for peace of mind you might never use. And yeah, people do get claims paid, but you have to read the fine print because a lot of those plans fight you on anything that looks like normal wear.
