Heard a thru-hiker say something that stuck with me
Guy at the REI in Denver told me he plans his routes by water sources, not miles. Said he had to hitch 20 miles off trail last summer because he ran dry on a stretch everyone said was easy. Made me rethink how I look at maps.

My buddy did something similar but with beer instead of water. He maps out every town that has a brewery along the trail. Missed a whole section of mountains because he took a detour for some IPA. Said it was worth it though. Different priorities I guess.

Did you ever find yourself skipping certain stretches on purpose or did you just stick to the main path? Honestly, I did something similar but with coffee shops on the Pacific Crest Trail. I planned my resupply stops around towns that had a good roastery, and yeah, I missed a few famous viewpoints because of it. But getting that fresh pour over after a week of instant coffee felt like winning the lottery. Different strokes for different folks, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Dude mapped his whole hike around IPAs. That's how you end up missing a mountain but finding a great hangover.
