I keep seeing people try to find Jupiter with just their eyes first

I was helping a friend in Phoenix last week who kept scanning the whole sky for Jupiter. He said it should be the brightest thing up there. I pointed out that even Jupiter looks like a star to the naked eye from a bright backyard. I told him to use the free SkyView app for 30 seconds to find its exact spot, then look up. Once you know where it is, you can see it's that steady, non-twinkling point of light. How many of you actually start with an app or a chart instead of just guessing?

Why not just use the app first to save time?

What if the app is the thing wasting time, ivan597? Sometimes you gotta just call a real person to get a straight answer instead of clicking through ten menus. I've spent longer trying to find a setting in an app than it would take to just get it fixed over the phone.

Yeah I used to love apps but you're totally right.
