Warning: I finally got a proper red flashlight for my star charts

For the first year I was just using my phone screen on low brightness, which wrecked my night vision every time. Last week I bought a basic $15 red LED headlamp from a camping store. The difference was huge. I could actually read my charts and see the Milky Way at the same time. Has anyone found a specific brand that holds up well?

That phone screen trick is a total trap. I used a cheap Energizer headlamp for a while, but the strap broke after a season. I switched to a Petzl Tikkina because the red light has a few brightness levels, and the battery lasts forever.

Saw a camping blog that said the phone light trick can mess with your night vision worse than a proper red light. @piperr58 must have better eyes than me, I guess. The Petzl red light levels really do help you keep your dark vision while reading a map.

Honestly that phone screen trick worked fine for me for years.

Same, it was a solid hack.
