Saw a barber in Austin use a straight razor on a fade line for the first time, completely changed my approach.
He used a Feather Artist Club razor with a fresh blade, and the line was so crisp I haven't touched my trimmers for that step since.

My buddy tried that and now his beard line looks like it was drawn with a ruler, right?

It's the same energy as those super sharp, painted-on eyebrows from a few years back. People get obsessed with a perfect line and forget it's supposed to look like it grows on a face. Natural things just don't have that kind of harsh edge. Your buddy's probably just following a tutorial that promised a "clean" look but went way too far.
