Serious question, ever have a simple neck shave turn into a 45 minute ordeal?

Had a guy come in yesterday for a basic shape up and neck shave, nothing crazy. He had a weird patch of ingrown hairs on the back of his neck that looked like a few bumps. I went in with my usual technique, but the skin got super irritated and red fast, like angry red. I had to stop, apply a hot towel for a solid ten minutes, then very carefully work each hair out with my tweezers under a magnifying lamp. What should have been a five minute tidy up took almost the whole appointment slot. I felt bad for the guy sitting there so long. Anyone got a better method for dealing with those super sensitive, stubborn ingrown patches without causing a scene?

Remember my cousin's wedding last summer. The barber did a hot towel thing that made my whole neck break out in these tiny white bumps, like a rash. I looked sunburned in all the photos. Ever since then I get nervous if a barber even looks at my neck for too long. Maybe some skin just can't handle the heat.

Ever try a pre-shave oil on spots like that? I've found a few drops of something simple like grapeseed oil can soften everything up without clogging pores. It lets the razor glide easier so you're not dragging over the bumps.

Oh interesting, I've never tried grapeseed oil. Do you put it on before your regular shaving cream, or do you use it by itself? I'm worried about it gunking up my razor.
