Showerthought: Most barbers I know can't name the actual angle of their blade

I was reading a trade journal last week and saw a stat that said 70% of barbers can't tell you the exact blade angle they use for a fade. They just go by feel. I thought about my own shop and realized I've never measured mine either. We spend hundreds on clippers and trimmers but nobody talks about the geometry of how we hold them. I found a little chart in an old barbering textbook from 1985 that mapped out angles for different hair types. It made me wonder if we are missing out on something by not being more precise about it. Has anyone here actually taken the time to measure and dial in their blade angle?

Feel for you @hugo_nelson. I think most of us are in the same boat honestly. We get so caught up in the rhythm of cutting that we forget to check the basics once in a while. That textbook stat about how few barbers know their blade angle hit close to home for me too. I remember seeing an old barbering book at a shop a few years back and it had those little diagrams with angles written by them. Made me realize how much we just rely on muscle memory instead of actual knowledge. But I also think there is something to be said for trusting your hands over a protractor. If a fade comes out clean and the client is happy, does it really matter if the angle is exactly 32 degrees or whatever? I bet half the guys who measured their angle once just went back to feeling it out anyway.

You got me thinking about my own setup and now I feel like a fraud who just wings it every time. My barber chair basically doubles as a geometry free zone where angles are guessed and prayers are offered. Maybe we should all chip in for a protractor and some of those clear plastic angle guides they use in woodworking. I bet half the barbers I know would measure their blade once then go right back to holding it however feels right anyway.
