Rant: I've been opening my smoker way too often to 'check'

My brisket kept coming out dry and I couldn't figure it out. My buddy in Austin finally pointed out that every time I peeked, I was dropping the temp by like 40 degrees and ruining the cook. How do you guys fight the urge to look?

Honestly this is a life thing for me. I get the same way with my oven, checking cookies every two minutes and they end up flat. Tbh it's about trusting the process and setting a timer so your hands stay busy elsewhere. I ruined a whole pork shoulder last summer from peeking. Now I just go do yard work or something, anything to not stand there and stare at it.

Man that pork shoulder story hurts. @charlie_allen, what do you do when the timer goes off but you still don't trust it?

But is it really that big of a deal? A quick peek never killed a brisket.
