Vent: Overheard a customer at the shop call a chain 'just a chain'
Guy was picking up his repaired road bike and said to his friend, 'It's just a chain, how hard can it be?' Made me think about all the times we explain wear, lube types, and proper tension. A Shimano 105 chain might look simple, but getting 2000 miles out of it takes knowing the details. How do you guys explain the importance of chain care without sounding like you're overcomplicating it?

Tell them it's the only part of the bike that touches two other moving parts thousands of times per mile. A worn chain grinds down your cassette and chainrings, turning a thirty dollar fix into a two hundred dollar repair real fast. I just say keeping it clean and lubed is cheap insurance for the expensive stuff.

How often do you actually check yours?

Honestly, I check it every couple weeks with a cheap chain checker tool. Letting it stretch too far is how you wreck your cassette and chainrings. A new chain is maybe thirty bucks, but letting it go means replacing the whole drivetrain for hundreds. It's the easiest maintenance to skip and the most expensive to ignore.
