TIL that a showrunner's audio commentary can totally change how you see a scene

I was rewatching The Leftovers last week and decided to try the director commentary on episode 3. The showrunner explained how they shot that big silent parade scene in just one take with a hidden camera rig, and it made me realize how much work goes into a moment I barely noticed before. I mean, I usually skip bonus features, but this one actually added something to the story for me. It made me think about other shows I've binged and wonder if I missed stuff by not listening to those talks. Has anyone else found a commentary track that completely shifted your take on a show?

Man that silent parade scene is one of my favorite TV moments ever. Funny enough I had the opposite experience with a commentary track once. I was watching the first season of True Detective and the director kept talking about how the shot of Marty and Rust driving was actually the second take because the first one had a stray dog run through frame and the actors couldnt stop laughing. Kinda ruined the serious mood for me a little lmao. Now I can't unsee that silly moment every time I watch it.

Understand completely @fisher.charlie, it's wild how one tiny detail can totally flip the whole vibe of a scene. I had something similar happen with a behind the scenes thing for Breaking Bad, now I just see the actors cracking up between takes. Have you ever tried watching that scene on mute to see if the dog memory still sticks?

Woah hold up, I gotta disagree on this one. The dog thing actually makes that True Detective scene better for me, not worse. It's like catching a little bit of real life sneaking into this super intense show. Knowing they cracked up makes those characters feel more human, like even Rust and Marty could laugh at something dumb if they saw it. I actually think that kind of stuff makes the mood deeper, not ruin it. People laugh at weird moments in real life all the time, you know? That's just how things work.
