Just realized my old forge setup was way safer than this new 'efficient' one

I was working in my shop in Tacoma last winter, trying to get a rush order done. My new high-output burner started backfiring, and a jet of flame shot out the air intake... it singed my sleeve and nearly caught my workbench on fire. I shut everything down, went back to my old reliable venturi burner the next day, and haven't had a single issue since. Anyone else think we overcomplicate things chasing efficiency sometimes?

Yeah, @rileyfox is onto something with that. It's like the new gear adds more failure points for that extra bit of speed or heat. My old venturi burner is basically just a tube and a gas jet, so there's hardly anything that can go wrong with it. Sometimes simple is just more reliable.

Man that sounds scary, glad you caught it in time. What is it with new gear always having some hidden problem the old stuff just didn't? I've definitely been there, chasing some shiny new spec only to end up missing the simple tool that just works every single time. Sometimes the best upgrade is the one you already had.
