PSA: My game group almost fell apart over a rules argument at a cafe in Portland
We were playing a heavy euro game, 'Terra Mystica', at a local cafe. The fight was about whether you could use a certain power twice in one round. It got loud. One friend, Mark, stood up and said 'This is stupid' and walked out. The rest of us just sat there, quiet. I texted him later that night and said we should just look up the official FAQ online together. We met up the next week, just the two of us, and went through the rulebook page by page. Found the answer in a forum post from 2014. It was a simple misread. How do you guys handle a big rules fight without wrecking the whole night?

Looking up the FAQ together was smart. My group has a house rule now. If a fight starts, we pause the game and all check our phones for the answer right then. No one gets to be the sole decider. It stops the loud back and forth before someone storms out.

Pause the game and all check our phones" sounds like a hostage negotiation. I can picture it now, six grown adults in tense silence, just the sound of frantic tapping while the board game sits there judging us all.

Wait, is that not how everyone's game nights go? I swear, half the time we're just trying to figure out who's actually winning without starting a whole argument. Idk, maybe it's just me but I've definitely been the one frantically scrolling while the board stares at me like I owe it an apology. That's usually when I realize I've been playing the wrong rules for the last hour and everyone else just let it slide to avoid a fight. Honestly, I think the silent phone check is way less awkward than that one guy who insists he knows the rules from memory but is definitely wrong.
