Critic said my chapter openings were too slow and I cut 400 words from each one
She told me the first two paragraphs of every chapter could be condensed to one line and she was right. Has anyone else had a beta reader point out something obvious you missed for months?

Man, I gotta push back on this a little. I get wanting to tighten things up, but 400 words from every chapter opening feels like you're cutting the warmup before a jog. Sometimes a slow start is what sets the mood or gives the reader room to breathe before the action hits. If every chapter starts with a one-liner, it might read like a list of bullet points instead of a story. Trust your gut on pacing, not every editor knows your book's rhythm better than you do.
