My book club spent 45 minutes arguing over whether 'Gatsby' was actually great or just lucky

I figured we'd breeze through that chapter in 10 minutes but instead half the room insisted he was a tragic hero and the other half called him a lucky fraud, so which side do you land on and how do you move a debate like that forward without someone storming off?
